In response to the pressure a new year can bring to be more, do more, do better, I offer this poem by Nic Askew. He gives us an alternative that just might capture your imagination. It did for me.
The Incorrect Mathematics of a Never-Enough Life by Nic Askew
We had imagined this to be
a journey of addition.
A journey of advancement.
A journey of reaching
higher, and
of becoming more.
When all along it
may have been
about a simple
subtraction.
A setting down of
unnecessary things,
so as to reveal the
astonishing nature of
our own reflection.
And the vast horizon
that would happen
readily enough.
Incorrect mathematics
may have been
responsible for the
unsettling consequence
of a never-enough life.
If you’re looking for an ally in doing less yet having more this year, reach out any time. I’d love to connect.
