Quote of the Month

“The art of life is a constant readjustment to our surroundings.”
~Kakuzo Okakura

Resisting change is natural; we take comfort in the familiar even when we see the need for something new. It’s important to remind ourselves that change creates opportunities to use and reveal our strengths while opening to possibilities beyond our comfort zone.

A New Perspective on Change

Change is the only constant in life, a fact echoed by the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus, likening life to a river in constant flow. Despite this universal truth, we deny, resist, or try to control change.

Keep in mind:

  • As the wise author, William Bridges, offers in his seminal book, Managing Transitions, all change starts with an ending. Even positive changes like getting married or starting a new job involve some losses. We serve ourselves and others when we take a moment to acknowledge those endings rather than resist them.
  • The scientific model of Allostasis discussed in this article tells us the brain is at its best when it is constantly rewiring itself and making new connections. Allostasis helps us view change as an ongoing dance. Life is a tango of unpredictability! A client of mine just put this into practice by deciding to learn Spanish and plan a trip to Spain to celebrate a milestone birthday.
  • In the midst of a change, remember and reinforce what remains constant, like your core values. Or, try saying this to yourself aloud: “This is what’s happening right now. I’m doing the best I can. What action can I take to move forward?”

From Crestfallen to Empowered

I remember working in a division of a large insurance company when one day, my boss told me I’d be getting a new client in a new division of the company – the international division. He said this was an esteemed new role and would come with a bump in salary.

I politely thanked him for the opportunity but inside, I was crestfallen. I treasured the client relationships I had built and was unsure about starting again with clients all over the world. But I talked with a mentor who reminded me of the strengths I had that could be transferred to the new job and also encouraged me to grab hold of the new possibilities as if I had chosen them.

Wow.

In Case You Missed It

In honor of my 60th birthday this year, I’m offering 60 hours of free coaching in exchange for a $60 donation to the You Matter Marathon, or a charity of your choosing. Check it out!

So far, we have raised $800 for the You Matter Marathon and the American Cancer Society! Let’s keep it going! It’s a great way to experience the power of coaching and do good at the same time.

My book is now an audiobook! Download it on Audible, Apple, Audiobooks, and Google Play.  If you enjoyed the book, tell me or leave a review.
